Why our design agency blends Soho pace with coastal craft
From our roots on the South Coast to our growing presence in the capital, Salad Creative has spent 25+ years working across two of the UK's most distinct creative environments. Most agencies tell you where they are, but we'd rather tell you what that means for how we work.
Two locations, one creative pulse
We built Salad in Bournemouth. That’s the foundation of our story, rather than a buried footnote. Over time, as our clients and ambitions grew, so did our connection to the capital. We didn’t expand because we felt we needed a postcode in the city to be taken seriously; the work simply took us there.
Today, we operate as a fully integrated Soho, London design agency and a South Coast creative marketing powerhouse. Far from being a compromise, it is something we’ve come to think of as a genuine strategic advantage.
This piece is about that duality. What London offers, what Bournemouth gives back, and how the blend of both shapes our culture, our approach, and the work we make for clients.
Geography really does influence mindset. The energy of London keeps us sharp, and the pace of the coast keeps us focused. What happens in the space between the two is what makes the work better.
The rhythm of Soho and the Capital
London doesn’t ease you in. The pace in the West End is relentless, the competition is dense, and clients there have usually worked with a lot of agencies before you.
Working with London-based clients keeps us agile. Briefs move fast, and expectations are as high as the surrounding skyscrapers. The creative scene, from long-established studios to the younger independents, sets a standard that keeps you hungry. Whether we are bouncing between client meetings or finding new cafes to work from in London, the city’s energy naturally sharpens our commercial edge.
Meeting that standard consistently has influenced how we approach our services. It has taught us how to push back on the wrong briefs and how to hold the quality of our thinking to a level that never wavers.
London didn’t build Salad. But working here, and working for clients rooted here, has been part of what sharpens us.
The perspective of Bournemouth
If London is the metaphorical sharpener, Bournemouth gives us the space to put that edge to work.

The South Coast boasts a creative community that often surprises people. Arts University Bournemouth produces incredible talent who regularly go on to work at the highest levels globally.
Groups like Silicon South, Speak Easy and You Are the Media have quietly built a network of people who care deeply about doing good work, free from the exhausting performance that sometimes surrounds it in larger cities.
For Salad, Bournemouth is our strategic anchor. The pace here creates the conditions for our Beautifully Effective approach – the kind of deep, craft-driven thinking that fast-moving environments tend to erode. It gives us room to question the obvious answer, space for creative design to breathe, and the ability to give a client our full attention.
Where the two worlds meet
The interesting thing about working across two environments is that you stop seeing them as opposites. Where London creates momentum, Bournemouth creates perspective.
What we’ve found is that the combination produces something neither city can produce alone: the agility of a city agency combined with the deep empathy and craft of a coastal studio.
That’s partly structural. Because we are an employee-owned agency, everyone at Salad has a genuine stake in the quality of what goes out the door. No account managers are protecting billing targets. No layers of sign-off dilute a good idea before it reaches a client. When the work isn’t right, everyone feels it. When it is, everyone owns it.
That matters when you’re operating across different environments and different client types.
What this means for our clients
The standard doesn’t shift depending on geography. Delivering work out of Bournemouth means we can compete fiercely with central London agencies on value, without ever compromising on top-tier quality.
Clients who come to us want a real working relationship, not a managed one. They want to know who’s on their brief, be able to pick up the phone, and trust that the person on the other end has actually thought about their business.
Whether we are executing high-level brand strategy for a London-based challenger brand, or building digital platforms for national organisations, our process remains the same. We know that listening closely to the brief and ensuring everything is held together by a single idea matters far more than where a designer happens to be sitting.
“The talent exists outside London, and the experience exists outside London. Some people just want to work somewhere that genuinely feels like a better place to be for them. That’s not a weakness, it’s a choice, and it shows up in how we work.”

Finding the creative balance
There’s a tendency in business to frame location as either an asset or a limitation. London means serious; elsewhere means lesser. We don’t buy that.
The agencies doing the most interesting things right now aren’t necessarily the ones with the most visible addresses. They’re the ones with the clearest thinking, the strongest relationships, and the discipline to back both up with craft. Bournemouth gave us the conditions to build that, and London continues to give us the appetite to keep raising the bar.
Geography is not the point; it’s the work, the culture, and the relationships that count.
