The experience of work experience

Experience is everything, and work placements provide an invaluable opportunity to develop your skills and kick-start your career.

Getting your foot in the door at the start of your career is always tricky. Experience is everything these days. As the old saying goes, ‘it’s not what you know, but who you know’. That’s why I believed it was crucially important to gain some experience in the second year of my Advertising degree at Bournemouth University.

I made contact with Salad after browsing their website. I was instantly inspired by their online portfolio, and knew they were the agency for me. Following an informal interview over a cup of coffee, I was delighted when Salad’s MD, Bella, offered me a year’s work experience, two days a week.

From day one, the whole Salad team was friendly and welcoming, and made settling in easy. Among the highlights was the opportunity to attend an SEO and content creation event in Brighton with Salad’s SEO guru, Oli. Just that one day filled my brain with so much fresh knowledge. Another highlight was every Friday, otherwise known as Cake Day.

Every day at Salad has been different, allowing me to learn new things and broaden my skillset at every turn. One day would see me focusing on SEO, gaining an understanding of how to succeed in the digital world, and the next day I’d be learning how to write compelling copy. I was given the opportunity to use my writing skills to create engaging content for everything from case studies to blogs and facebook adverts. I have always had a passion for writing, and thanks to the Salad team’s knowledge and feedback, this passion has grown even stronger.

The Salad team have taught me so much, and the huge range of knowledge they’ve shared and armed me with will benefit me in the future. I have recently secured myself a three-month communications placement at the RNLI, which I believe I wouldn’t have managed was it not for my time at Salad Creative. Working here has been such a pleasure. Not only have I learnt more than I had ever hoped, but I’ve met such inspiring people along the way.

Salad has truly set me up for my future career, and for that I am eternally grateful.
